In 1947, the club established one of the first junior sailing programs in Hawaii. The program is still dedicated to teaching sailing skills to Hawaii’s youth, and many excellent sailors have graduated from the program. Club members Dave McFaull and Mike Rothwell went on to win silver medals in the Tornado class in the 1976 Olympic Games.

The Waikiki Yacht Club, was established in 1947. Duke Kahanamoku was founding member, a celebrated Hawaiian swimmer and surfer
who was also a skilled sailor.
With Dr. Haaheo and Commodore Mike. Prayers for the many sailors from around the world who find safe haven in Hawaii Harbors and the Waikiki Yacht Club!

In 1944, 37 charter members had a vision. The original board of directors included Duke Kahanamoku, Dick Soelberg, John Child, Bob Miller, Art Myhre, Guy Rothwell and many others who played a key role. George Over, Jr. was the club’s first commodore.
