STRAUB BENIOFF MEDICAL CENTER
The “aala” is a Hawaiian crow, also known as the ʻAlalā (Corvus hawaiiensis), a species unique to Hawaii that is currently extinct in the wild. Once considered sacred, the ʻAlalā’s decline was caused by habitat loss, invasive predators, and disease. Conservationists have been breeding them in captivity since the 1970s and have begun reintroduction efforts to release them back into the wild, with recent releases on Hawaii Island and Maui.
