The rising of Makaliʻi (the constellation Pleiades) at sunset marks the beginning of the Hawaiian new year, known as Makahiki. Makahiki usally begins mid-November and ends in late January or February, aligning with the rainy season. It is a time set aside for tribute, harvest, sport, and play. The Makahiki in the context of Prison Rehabilitation and Restorative Justice is an important culture based program to support and develop. Mahalo to Halawa Correctional for having the first Makahiki Opening Ceremony this past Monday. Mahalo to the Warden and staff, and Chapel support and the Makahiki Crew – Haaheo, Steve, Mary!
