Sept 2nd Queen Liliuokalani Birthday Remembrance and Commemoration at Soldiers Chapel with Garrison Command and Army Chaplains, and Royal Order of Kamehameha Chapter 8. The Ahupuaa of Wai’anae includes Schofield and Wahiawa – Soldiers Chapel and Schofield! The Royal Order of Wai’anae, with many other Native Hawaiian leaders, meets regularly with the Armed Forces on issues related to lands and sea, and cultural and natural resources. The issue of expiring Army land leases will be an important issue for Hawaii, it will be important to understand the history and the role of the U.S. in Hawaii.

In 1900 the Chinatown Fire destroyed the original “twin tower” Kaumakapili Church which was the tallest building structure in Honolulu. This was two years after the illegal occupation of Hawaii in 1898, after the illegal overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1893, and after the imprisonment of the Queen in Iolani Palace in 1895. The current location and new facilities of Kaumakapili Church in Kalihi Palama was the official site of the UCC Apology to Na Kanaka Maoli given by President Dr. Paul Sherry on January 17th 1993.

Queen Liliuokalani was baptized and became a member of the Episcopal Church of the Hawaiian Kingdom on May 16, 1896.

The Father of Modern China Sun Yet Sen attended and graduated from Iolani School in 1886.

Dr. Guanson was the President of the Board of Homeland Ministries of the United Church of Christ during the UCC Apology and Redress of 1993, and served many years as the Vice President of the International Fellowship for Reconciliation.
Dr. Kahu Kaleo Patterson of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Wahiawa, and the Pacific Justice and Reconciliation Center, and Native Hawaiian Advisory Council for the Army. Churches and community have a critical role to engage in the review of the past and present history, and future of Army lands leases.
