In particular, almost 50% of Hawaii residents are of Filipino, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and other East and Southeast Asian groups, many of whom are descended from plantation laborers who immigrated to Hawaii during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Nearly one in five Hawaii residents is an immigrant, while one in seven residents is a native-born U.S. citizen with at least one immigrant parent. In 2018, 266,147 immigrants (foreign-born individuals) comprised 19 percent of the population.
